A grant is an agreement for investigative research to be performed within a specific time period.

A contract is an agreement for the procurement of goods or services.

A gift is money given to the university whereby there is no expectation of anything given in return, such as data or results.

Direct costs are the expenditures directly related to the particular research project.

Indirect costs, also called Facilities and Administrative (F&A’s) costs, are incurred for the necessary support and service functions related to sponsored research but not directly attributable to that project.

Cost sharing is the University sharing in the cost of the research project. Sources of cost sharing are: cash, contributed effort of faculty and other researchers, graduate student tuition, equipment, materials and supplies, and in-kind and third party contributions.
